Letters, Sept. 28, 2024: ‘Sad story unfolding among royals’

Article content

I’ve read how Harry melts the heart of King Charles, who’s fighting pancreatic cancer. He’s facing the fight of his life with an uncertain future wishing only that his sons William and Harry reconcile their sibling differences. King Charles has shown himself to be a brave man, fulfilling his duties as King of the Commonwealth while receiving a pancreatic cancer treatment that has a very low success rate. I pray his sons will embrace each other with love if only for the sake of Charles, who deserves no less.

PETER J. MIDDLEMORE Sr.

(Hopefully they can reconcile. And our hopes are with King Charles during a very tough time.)

Time to get real

In cancelling his party’s supply-and-confidence agreement that has helped sustain Justin Trudeau’s Liberal minority government, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh again rightfully denounced the Liberals’ continual catering to big money and corporate interests. An unprecedentedly large portion of Canadians are financially struggling, especially with continuing food and housing price inflation. Thus, fiscally progressive governmental policy/practice is also needed. It’s no longer morally or politically sufficient for the Liberals to neoliberally solely support the core social issues — those of race, sexuality, gender and unrestricted abortion access — while so many people strain to pay for some of life’s basic necessities.

(Many Canadians are struggling with the basics.)

Political survival

Just wanted to thank Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, for opening up the opportunity for the Bloc Quebecois to become prominent players in the game of political survival with the Liberal government. Insert sarcasm and scorn. Better keep an eye on all of the NDP caucus because they are plotting to take over leadership. Why don’t you rescue all Canadians from this madness and maybe save yourself from political oblivion?

JAYNE FOSTER

(Words matter. When you hear the NDP leader say he wants to get things done for all Canadians, he doesn’t really mean it because he speaks with such scorn against anyone who supports the Conservatives. Some latest polling, however, shows Singh might have a hard time holding on to his own seat.)

Root causes

Solving the problem of the ‘homeless’ can only be solved by dealing with the root problem. Addiction and mental illness!  We do not need shelters. We need long-term treatment centres to deal with the physical, psychological, and social problems. Shelters are only an expensive short-term answer. Would save money and human beings in the long run.

BERTHA McLAUGHLIN

(Would be a start.)
