Letters, May 3, 2024: ‘Time will tell with rezoning hearings’

Vote on it

I got a good laugh the other day. I read Rick Bell’s column on Mayor Gondek’s reaction to Danielle Smith wanting to have political parties at the municipal level. Gondek said, you are elected to serve the people and make sure that their needs are met. Pretty funny coming from her and the hateful eight. Gondek said we needed rezoning, but let’s talk about it. How about, let’s have a referendum on it? Instead, we are having rezoning hearings that will amount to nothing. Results of which will be hidden.

Progressively worse

It used to be that progressive politicians were a boutique group relegated mostly to the backrooms of NDP ideology. They would propose ideas that would serve a very small group of individuals while treading on the standard norms of the majority. They were a baffling curiosity. But now they’ve become the main voice of liberal ideology where there are no walls between the NDP and Liberals. It’s too bad, actually, because liberals and conservatives used to at least share the belief of the common good.

Mix up the order

The Toronto Blue Jays have a batting coach, two assistants and Don Mattingly, who is there to help fine tune the hitting offence. Well, no, it is not that early in the season so someone is not doing their job. That includes the players. Time to kick some butt by a change in the batting order and or trading the deadwood.

(It’s high time they do something. Things have gone from bad to worse for Canada’s lone MLB squad.)

Cooler heads must prevail

When I listened to a song recently (For What It’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield), I was reminded just how fragile the world is right now, especially on college and university campuses. Although some of the lyrics apply to other circumstances, many of the lyrics are prudent to what is currently happening, for example: ‘There’s something happening here, What it is ain’t exactly clear, There’s a man with a gun over there, There’s battle lines being drawn, Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong.’ Saner heads must prevail here, free speech, education and workplace access are for everyone not just a few.
