I can imagine our departed for the heavens charismatic PM Brian Mulroney, who crushed monotone John Turner with a landslide 211 seats eclipsing “Dief the Chief’s” 208-seat victory, being welcomed on the other side by the Gipper and Iron Lady. As a Baby Boomer, I recall it was Mulroney’s spirited speeches and memorable quip to Turner “you had an option, sir” that compelled me to make it to the ballot box in 1984. While many dreaded his GST, it was at a much lower rate than the MST (manufacturer’s sales tax) it replaced that in concert with his Canada-U.S.Free Trade Agreement smashed through the walls of U.S. protectionism, bolstering Canadian exports to new highs! His singing “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” with President Ronald Reagan at the Shamrock Summit was entertaining, however, his large, protracted deficits gave rise to Preston Manning’s truly conservative Reform Party that, along with rebel Lucien Bouchard’s Bloc Quebecois, paved the way for PM Kim Campbell’s defeat. I remember Mulroney’s eulogy to fighter pilot and President George H.W. Bush which was heart-warming. My condolences to Mulroney’s wife of over a half century, Mila, MPP Caroline Mulroney, and his family.

(There hasn’t been a political leader in Canada like Mulroney in many years. He has left an indelible mark with many successful trade deals and policies Canadians still benefit from)
Stop the bill
Re “Our freedom at risk” (Jerry Agar, March 2): Freedom of speech is the one that means the most. Without freedom of speech we cannot win back other freedoms taken from us. Freedom of speech allows us to debate and share differing ideas thereby expanding our horizons. The idea the government will be able to put you under house arrest and fine you for something they think you might say is a scary proposition. We must flood our MPs with calls to never let this bill pass the house.
JANE GILBERT
(Without question we need to let our MPs know this is not acceptable. It is a terrifying notion. Government will be responsible for these decisions. It’s hard to comprehend this is even constitutional)
What should they do?
There is no doubt the people of Palestine are suffering. I recently asked a protester what they would have had Israel do, when they were attacked by Hamas. He had no answer. Neither did the other three that I asked. When I mentioned Hamas was the elected government of these people who are suffering so badly, I was told I don’t understand. What is it that I don’t understand?
LYNDA DEGANIS
(Did they even condemn Hamas?)
