Letters, June 5, 2024: ‘Canada’s Stanley Cup success story’

Go Oilers!

Congratulations to the Edmonton Oilers for reaching the Stanley Cup Final. You have accomplished what our government hasn’t been able to in the last eight years — unite all Canadians together in a joyful way (much needed, may I add). And thanks for the greed of Nylander, the Leafs had a small part in your success with the gifts of Hyman and Ceci. Way to go, Nylander. I hope you do go. Bring Stanley home.

(It will be interesting to see to what degree Canada gets behind the Oilers.)

Taking on water

(Re: Carbon pricing has become a significant political liability for Justin Trudeau.) It seems the Trudeau Titanic is consistently taking in more water than ever before on a regular basis now. By the time Election Day eventually rolls in, this ill-fated tugboat will sink naturally to the bottom of the cold and darkened Atlantic. The metal from this doomed vessel will probably won’t be salvaged.

DONALD K. MUNROE

(This ship is sinking.)

Shirking our responsibility

Canada must increase its defence budget. Of all the NATO countries, we are at the bottom of the list for defence spending. This must change. Vladimir Putin is waiting in the wings. We also need to build an ammunition factory, as Canada only has a two-day supply, which is outrageous. Wake up, politicians, protect our country.

(We must live up to our obligations. And our military deserves the very best.)

Unhappy campers

It is not surprising people are expressing dissatisfaction with this government. We have a premier who thinks she knows what is best for everyone. Surely her priorities should be in our crisis — health-care system, crumbling infrastructure, housing and cost of living. Forget pension plans, and stop telling local governments how to do things.

GORDON WELCH

(Albertans have been pretty clear on the thought of messing with their pensions.)

Backing Bill 20

When you see Calgary city councillors totally ignoring Calgary residents regarding rezoning, thank goodness Bill 20 is on the books. We need oversight on this municipal government that will not listen to the people who voted them in and who they are supposed to represent. I hope Bill 20 gets enough “teeth” to become law in time to throw out our incapable, self-centred, recklessly spending mayor and certain councillors.

PETER SZECSY

(You may be expecting too much out of Bill 20.)
