If the Iron Lady Premier Danielle Smith achieves carve-outs for Alberta oil when President Donald Trump announces his Tariffs on Feb. 1, she will look like a genius and Ottawa with the rest of the provinces will look like idiots!
CHRIS ROBERTSON
(Tough to bet against her sometimes.)
Leader needed
Love him or hate him, you have to respect the fact Trump puts the U.S. first. If only we, in Canada, had a leader with his convictions. It sure as hell isn’t any of the Liberal candidates! In fact, they’re the ones responsible for the mess we find ourselves in now. I’m sure he’s shaking in his boots over the prospect of going up against “Team Canada.”
JOHN HANCOCK
(Our PM has his convictions. They just don’t line up with much of the rest of Canada.)

Crisis mismanagement
Canada reminds me of the crisis management Los Angeles has to endure during this latest round of fires. We have lost sight of proper democratic and common-sense approach to governance. Socialism and paying for everything, along with an abdication of responsibilities on our energy sector, has only hurt us in the long run. It seems our back-up reservoir and fire hydrants are out of water because we failed to plan for bad times. Don’t blame Trump — look in the mirror and blame the leaders that lacked foresight.
PETER KARAS
(It’s astonishing the level of incompetence from the “leaders” in California. In fact Trump had helped lay out a water-use plan years ago but they didn’t listen and instead focussed their resources away from fire fighting)

Play hardball
If you want to counter Trump’s proposed tariffs, do not play their game. Effective countermeasures should be unable to be used as American public propaganda. Canada is just a buffer zone between the U.S. and Russia. To get their attention, propose withdrawal from NORAD or NATO, or source armaments solely from Europe. The average American could not relate, however the U.S. government would have to pay attention. Canada would have to increase defence spending, which is necessary anyway.
EDWARD WYCHOPEN
(If Canada had a properly functioning federal government we could have a reasonable response to the threat of tariffs)
