Unions are beneficial to help protect employees providing safe working environments, fair wages and some benefits. At the same time, unions such as postal workers, port workers, nurses and railroad employees should not hold hostage and/or paralyze the entire country or city by holding back services to get their demands. Arbitration is key. Arbitration is a great tool for compromise. Each side does not get exactly what they want, but each side gets something. So future negotiation regarding union strikes against employers should become a thing of the past. Acceptance of such an idea will end holding a country, province or city hostage. No more strikes. No more hardships. Only then can everyday people like you and me get on with their lives.

(If only it were that easy.)
Donald calling
So that’s all it took? After spending months (years?) in a futile attempt to convene a first minister’s meeting, the premiers finally got their wish and Wednesday a virtual meeting was held. And the catalyst for this hastily called meeting — a Trump tweet (Truth Social actually, but whatever) threatening 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. Clearly, Canada’s Premiers hold nowhere near the political sway the American president-elect does. Next time they need the PM to respond to any of their concerns, they need to get The Donald involved.

Trump’s strong message
Re “Trump tax no bluff” (Warren Kinsella, Nov. 27): Trump’s win was largely due to his promise to stop the ridiculous mass border “invasion” into the U.S. While this was mainly directed at Mexico, you can’t close the southern border without worrying about the northern —hence the double tariff threat. So Trump announces the threat of 25% tariffs two months before taking over, hoping the message gets the two countries moving. And it worked! Trudeau spoke with him right away and met with all premiers. There will be agreements at both borders likely before Trump’s first day. I know you hate him, Warren, but we should be so lucky here.

(There will be some action before inauguration. And if this gets Trudeau to act, so be it)
PM Donald
If the result is a stronger border and better defence, Trump will have done us a service. Shame on Canada. Maybe he can help us with bail reform and pro-Hamas so-called protests. Trump for PM?
STEVE PECK
(If the Conservatives win the next federal election, they will address those issues thankfully)
