Didn’t think it through

My wife and I are not wealthy, we live off CPP and OAS. Hearing the NDP want to tax the rich, I thought, OK, Canada needs the money. Until I read reports including an insightful one from Bloomberg News. Past socialist governments in France initiated a wealth and capital gains tax. It cost the French government almost twice as much as yielded by the wealth taxes. Many charities lost donations, causing some to demand taxpayer support. Many students lost bursaries. Donations were reduced to hospitals, colleges and universities. Over 10,000 wealthy people left France. When these individuals left, France lost their wealth tax revenue, their income taxes, and their local spending. The idea was scrapped in 2020. These tax increases may sound good but be careful what you ask for. They may cost us more in the end. Young people are supposed to be happy with increased national debt. What a legacy the Liberals have left them.

Opportunity to work
Soon grads of all different areas — technical, college and university — will be looking for jobs. Those fortunate enough to return to family farms may also want to go in their own directions of choice. We see the employment figures —under the pressures of inflation, increasing climate taxes, and tax, tax and more tax — graduates need to start at the starting line, not be finished off by the new realities most Canadians must adjust to. Less is much less as the cost of living soars. It is important to know now what areas are open from finance, engineering, agriculture and food, and the technical skills required in any vocation. Exams are here and the least worry new graduates need is the burden of where and what employment opportunities are available. Those with student loans will be required to pay up, much like the COVID-19 loans now due. For those in whatever position before graduation, employers need to realize the yesterdays are over and it is time to seek out the students and their applied experiences to land one. Great volumes of great fortune to the grads of 2024 and let’s hope employers get it that these are costly times for most everyone and the sooner they can land a job makes both life and living going forward much more cheerful because the grads have met the challenges and are ‘ready aye ready’ to go to work. Please do not sink their ships.
