Stamps Lose Shootout To Bombers

It was a back and forth battle all night long but the Calgary Stampeders fell to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 41-37 on Friday night in Winnipeg.

Calgary falls to 2-3 on the season while the Bombers climb to 2-4.

Tommy Stevens had two touchdowns while Erik Brooks and Marken Michel added the others in the loss.

It didn’t take the Stampeders long to find the endzone as Jake Maier hit Jalen Philpot with a 53-yard catch-and-run on the first offensive play of the game. That was followed up with a 19-yard rush from Dedrick Mills who re-entered the lineup after missing last week with an injury. Then, it was Tommy Time as Tommy Stevens plunged into the endzone to make the score 7-0.

Tre Roberson picked off Zach Collaros on the Bombers first drive but Winnipeg was able to steal one back right away and returned the ball all the way to the Stamps 30-yardline. That would lead to a Blue Bombers field-goal making it 7-3.

The Bombers got the ball back but Charles Wiley registered his first CFL sack on Collaros on second-down forcing a punt. Peyton Logan lost the ball on a fumble just inside Bomber territory and Winnipeg was able to recover.

Winnipeg managed a field-goal from that drive making the score after one-quarter 7-6 Stamps.

Calgary answered with a field-goal of their own on the first drive of the second quarter putting the score at 10-6.

The Blue Bombers added their third field-goal of the half on their next drive to make it 10-9 with 6:20 remaining in the second-quarter.

Rene Paredes added his second field-goal of the game from 41-yards out to put the Stampeders up 13-9.

The Bombers got their first major of the night with 2:24 remaining in the half to take the lead 16-13.

Winnipeg took an interception back to the house on the Stamps next drive to go up 23-13.

Maier and the Stamps responded quickly. Mills ripped off a 53-yard run and then on the next play Maier found Erik Brooks in the endzone to make the score 23-20 Bombers.

Calgary got the ball in Bomber territory with 28-seconds left in the half following a punt. They would add another field-goal sending this one to the half all tied up 23-23.

The Bombers were in the process of a scoring drive with their first touch of the second-half but Roberson got his second interception of the night, this time in the endzone.

Winnipeg was able to block a Calgary punt and took over on the Stampeders 32-yardline. Winnipeg moved the ball on the ground and eventually found the endzone to make the score 30-23.

Calgary put a quality drive together to start the fourth quarter and Stevens was able to rush in his second of the night from short yardage to tie the game 30-30.

The Bombers put a field-goal through the uprights with 9:41 remaining to regain the lead, 33-30.

It only took the Stamps a couple of plays to get back in the redzone and the drive was finished off by a Maier short strike to Marken Michel to give the Stampeders the 37-33 lead.

Winnipeg answered again with a major of their own and added a two-point convert to make the score 41-37 Bombers with 3:06 to go.

The Stamps were forced to punt the ball away and were unable to get a stop making the final score 41-37 Winnipeg.
