“Unreal”: Canadian lottery winners kept $1 million jackpot a secret

A visit to the grocery store became a life-changing shopping trip for Christine and Robert Loewen after they learned they had won big in the lottery.

The Maple Ridge, BC, couple discovered they had won $1 million from the August 6, 2024, Lotto Max draw.

“I was in Fifth Avenue Grocery,” Robert said of the memorable moment. “I said ‘No!’ and scanned again. I was excited and called Christine over to look.”

The Loewens had purchased and validated their winning ticket at the same convenience store on 216 Street in Maple Ridge.

At the time of claiming their jackpot, the Metro Vancouver couple hadn’t yet shared the news of their win with anyone.

When asked how it feels to win $1 million, Christine responded that it was “unreal.”

“We’re still in disbelief. We haven’t slept!” said Christine.

The couple added that they didn’t have any immediate plans for their windfall but planned to talk to a financial advisor.
