A key bridge near the downtown core in Calgary will be closed next week, as a milestone is being hit on the rehabilitation of the 4th Avenue Flyover.
The City of Calgary says construction crews have nearly completed their planned work on the left side of the bridge and will begin work on the right side next week.
Commuters can expect a full bridge closure beginning on November 15 at 9 pm, reopening to traffic on November 18 at 5 am, to facilitate this transition.
The traffic disruptions aren’t done after the bridge closure — the city says rolling overnight closures will be needed for Riverfront Avenue, Memorial Drive, and Edmonton Trail in order to install the work platform for the right side of the bridge. The overnight closures will occur over a period of approximately four weeks.
The 4th Avenue flyover was built in 1982 and carries two lanes of traffic towards 3rd Street SE. As one of the main routes into downtown, the overall structure spans 430-meters crossing over the Bow River.
The project benefits include:
- improving the condition of the flyover, including the addition of streetlights.
- extending the service life of the flyover by roughly 35 years.
Construction on the project began back in April and is anticipated to be wrapped up by late fall 2025, per the city website.
