It’s surely a bucket-list spot to stop while on the road in Alberta, and the oldest general store in the province has opened its doors once again.
Located in the hamlet of Namao in central Alberta, the store has been standing since 1902 and had previously been closed for a number of years.
It opened yesterday and invites customers to “grab a coffee, sandwich, snack or cozy up at the bar for a pint of local beer or a nice wine or spirit.”
Julie-Ann and Brendan McNeilly, the grandchildren of the store’s longtime previous owners, brought the store back to life. Talk about keeping the business in the family!
In a post to Instagram, Johnny’s reopening is described as “retuning back to its General Store roots”, with a coffee bar offering pastries and baked goods, plus sandwiches and snacks to take away or enjoy in-store.
The store also features a new bar area and mercantile items featuring locally made goods, including collectibles, Johnny’ s-themed merchandise, and other gift items. If you’re looking to support local this holiday season, this seems like a great place to do it!
