One of Calgary’s most legendary live music venues will officially be closing its doors at the end of the month.
After months of anticipation and awaiting news of the venue’s future, the team behind the Blues Can has finally announced that its iconic Inglewood location at 1429 9th Avenue SE will be closing at the end of December.
“If you want to see the old place one more time you better get here before the end of the year ’cause we won’t be here as of January 1st 2025,” the team said in an update on its website.
While the legendary space will be a huge loss to the city’s community of music lovers, the Blues Can team also revealed some exciting news about a new location on the horizon.
While the famed spot will no longer be open in Inglewood, the Blues Can will take over a new space at 2002 16th Avenue NW, the former site of Tipperary’s Pub.
“After months of work, stress, back and forth, up and down, advice to the contrary and dire warnings of everything from the economy to the state of the arts scene and the US election. The Blues Can has a new home […] We just signed a lease yesterday so we have it in writing. Bigger and better, we are movin’ on up,” it said.
While the new digs are an extremely welcome development, the team behind the Blues Can is also calling on the Calgary community for support to assist with the “financially demanding and risky” move.
“Please come for dinner and a drink, watch a show, purchase something from our auction or just donate,” the update reads.
“It would mean the world to us, and yours just might make the difference between us making it and not. So come on live music lovers, let’s show the world that Calgary has a first rate music scene.”
The Blues Can will certainly be missed in Inglewood, but hopefully, it won’t be too long before Calgarians can check out its new home.
