Seven Calgary companies named top employers for young people in Canada

If you’re just starting out and on the hunt for a new job in Calgary, seven local companies just made it on the list of Canada’s top employers for young people.

The ranking, first published by The Globe and Mail back in 2000, is an editorial competition organized by Canada’s Top 100 Employers.

To make it onto the list, organizations are evaluated by editors of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People based on programs they have to attract and retain younger workers. Key benefits include tuition assistance, the availability of co-op or work-study programs, mentorship, and training programs. The editors also review each employer for career development initiatives that can assist young people in advancement and determining their career paths.

The list showed some serious love for YYC, with seven Calgary-based companies, including ATCO Ltd., Gibson Energy Inc., and Imperial Oil Limited showing up.

ATCO Ltd. found itself on the list of best employers for young people in Canada due to its engineering development program, which in turn offers exposure to a variety of company functions through job shadowing and temporary work assignments.

Dentons Canada LLP was tapped due to its partnering with other law firms to develop Avenue, a 12-week internship program for Black undergraduate students.

Oil and gas companies in Calgary really showed up. Gobsopn Energy Inc. landed on the list thanks to hosting a two-day women’s development program to help female students learn about career options in the energy sector, while Imperial Oil Limited and Keyera Corp. appeared, too.

Imperial made the cut thanks to providing ongoing learning opportunities for employees at all stages of their careers with access to a catalogue of almost 12,000 course offerings. Keyera launched a new graduate program featuring rotational and non-rotational roles as well as a dedicated mentor for participants’ first year of employment.

Another company to make the list was Fluor Canada Ltd., due in part to it offering aspiring managers the opportunity to accelerate their development through a rotational program featuring three to four rotations in different business areas.

Last but not least, Lafarge Canada Inc. was included due to it offering co-op placements and internship opportunities across various business areas, including concrete, aggregates, pipe, environment, and finance, to name a few.
