An extremely rare Wayne Gretzky hockey card collection will soon be going back up for auction after a botched deal.
The collection, which is believed to feature as many as 25 to 27 Gretzky rookie cards, was won in an auction by Jack Arshawsky, an Ontario-based real estate agent, in April. Arshawsky won the bidding at a whopping price of $3.72 million USD.
The entire set appeared to be Arshawsky’s, but there turned out to be one major problem; the money for the cards never came through.
Arshawsky told the Globe and Mail that he isn’t sure what happened to the money, and suggested it may have gotten lost in cyberspace. Chris Ivy, the director of sports category for Heritage Auctions, doesn’t seem to be buying it.
“All I could say is that he did not, he never sent any form of payment for the lot.”
While neither party commented about potential legal action being considered, Ivy did confirm that the cards will be going back up on the market. The bidding will begin at $750,000 USD, though the worth of the cards is estimated to be roughly $3 million USD.
The cards were initially discovered in an anonymous family’s attic in Saskatchewan. They rightfully figured the cards could be worth a significant amount of money and chose to put them up for auction.
Though the Saskatchewan family failed to see this bid go through as they were certainly hoping, another offer should go through soon, allowing them to get the money they deserve after their incredible discovery.
