NHL games will soon be televised in cartoon form

The NHL is creating a new weekly show to help grow the game amongst the younger generation.

The league is launching a new 30-minute animated program, NHL HOCKEYVERSE Matchup of the Week, which recreates real-life games, featuring teen commentators.

On-ice visualizations are made possible by NHL Edge positional data, which the league says will provide “stunning realism and dynamic movements.”

The NFL has had a similar approach in recent years, partnering up with Nickelodeon for a youth-specific broadcast. To date, there have been six NFL on Nickelodeon games, where they aimed to capture the attention of parents and children.

The first episode of the new series, featuring last Saturday’s game between the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals, will air in Canada on February 1 at 9 am PT/noon ET on Sportsnet.

“We’re delighted to air NHL HOCKEYVERSE Matchup of the Week on Sportsnet and NHL Network, to continue expanding the use of NHL Edge Positional Data, excite new and existing young fans in Canada and the United States, and deliver even more innovative and unique ways to experience our great game,” said NHL executive vice president David Lehanski.

In addition to airing on Sportsnet, the show will be available globally on the NHL’s YouTube channel, making it accessible to fans worldwide.
