NHL considering jersey format change that hasn’t been seen in over 20 years

The NHL is considering a jersey change that, if implemented, will take some getting used to.

Teams used to wear white at home, while visiting teams would wear dark uniforms. That changed ahead of the 2003-04 season, when teams began wearing coloured jerseys at home, while visiting teams donned white uniforms.

According to a recent report from Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News, the NHL might be changing it back in the next NHL/NHLPA collective bargaining agreement.

Kennedy also asked if the NHL would ever allow two teams to wear dark colours in the same game. It’s something that could work when the Toronto Maple Leafs (blue) play the Detroit Red Wings (red).

The CBA is in place until Sept. 15, 2026, meaning that if we were to see this change, it likely wouldn’t come until the 2026-27 season at the earliest.

The NHL and NHLPA are expected to begin talks in regards to working out a new deal in the very near future, meaning we could soon have an update on the potential changing of jerseys.
