Most Canadians want Canada to retaliate with tariffs against the U.S.

A majority of Canadians support retaliatory tariffs against the United States, according to a new survey.

Per a Leger poll, 45 per cent of Canadians said they are “strongly” in favour of such tariffs, while 25 per cent said they are “somewhat” in favour of them. The survey also outlined some other ways that Canadians are considering pushing back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to impose tariffs on Canadian goods:

  • 68 per cent said they’re now buying more Canadian products.
  • 63 per cent said they are now buying fewer American products in stores, with 62 per cent saying they’ve done the same online.
  • 52 per cent said they’re buying less from Amazon.
  • 50 per cent said they’ve reduced purchases from American fast food chains.
  • 43 per cent said they’re shopping less at U.S.-based retailers.
  • 30 per cent said they’ve cancelled planned trips to the U.S.
  • 19 per cent said they’ve cancelled a subscription to a U.S. streaming service.

Overall, 27 per cent of respondents say they now view the U.S. as an “enemy.”

The Leger poll was conducted online between Feb. 14 and 17 and surveyed 1,500 Canadians. It should be noted that online polls can’t be assigned a margin of error because they don’t randomly sample the population.

On Feb. 3, Trump agreed to pause tariffs on Canada for 30 days after a call with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump has long maintained the tariffs, which the U.S. is also planning to impose on Mexico, are intended to pressure Canada to address American concerns about drug trafficking and illegal immigration. However, this also comes as Trump has repeatedly expressed his fascist desire for Canada to become the “51st state,” which Trudeau believes is a “real thing” after talking with him. Trump also said he wants to use “economic force” to make Canada a U.S. state.

For now, though, we are also waiting to see what the ever-petulant U.S. president has to say after he made boastful posts about the 4 Nations hockey game only for Canada to defeat the U.S. 3-2.

Have you responded to Trump’s tariff threats with any retaliatory measures similar to — or different from — those made by the polled Canadians? Let us know in the comments.
