Canadians are responding to a Fox News clip after one host made some interesting claims about how cheap housing would be if Canada became a US state.
The comments were made by Fox News host Jesse Watters on The Five, a roundtable discussion program that airs on the network.
The panel was discussing President-elect Donald Trump’s most recent quip at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, referring to him as “governor” of the “great state of Canada” in a post he made on Truth Social on Monday night.
Watters: We’re talking about doubling the size of the US… We think we have a housing crisis now.. go to Canada, you can get a thousand acres for $50… You know how global warming is getting worse.. it can become nice and temperate in Canada. pic.twitter.com/DcAB3fW9Un

Watters toyed with the idea of Canada actually becoming a US state and noted that Trump would “go down in history as the most expansionist president of all time” if that happened.
He went on to share some “economic benefits” of this fictional scenario.
“We think we have a housing crisis now? People can’t find homes, the rent’s too damn high? Go to Canada! You get 1,000 acres for 50 bucks. You can hunt, you can fish, you can swim, you can hike. Build yourself a log cabin, problem solved,” said Watters.
He went on to claim that Canada is much more “temperate” than the US, making it an ideal place to evade concerns of global warming.
“We might just all move north and… just enjoy the weather,” he laughed.
Canadians call out Watters on housing claims
However, many were quick to comment on a clip of the roundtable posted on X, calling out the misconceptions he shared about living in Canada, especially with the cost of housing.
“Uh. This Canadian would like to know where I can buy a thousand acres for $50,” wrote one X user.
Uh. This Canadian would like to know where I can buy a thousand acres for $50. (It can’t be north of 60)

“Canada has some of the least affordable housing in the world,” wrote another.
“1,000 acres for $50, he’s clearly never been here,” said one commenter.

One X-user joked that Watters likely “hasn’t heard of Vancouver” and the city’s exorbitant housing prices.
Hahaha buddy hasn’t heard of Vancouver

“Canada is not for sale. Canada is not the US,” wrote one Canadian, adding that watching the clip made them “sad.”
As a Canadian, let’s be real here $50 wouldn’t even buy you 10 ft of land.

Trump’s continued mention of Canada becoming a “state”
US-Canada relations have been tested by Trump’s threats to implement significant tariffs on Canadian imports if border and drug issues are not addressed.
Trump previously made remarks about Canada becoming a US state during his meeting with Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, earlier this month.
However, Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who also attended the meeting, later clarified that Trump was simply joking.
But Trump followed those comments with a cryptic AI image on his Truth Social account depicting him looking over mountain ranges next to a Canadian flag. He captioned the post “Oh Canada” with no further explanation about its context.
Trump reiterated his stance on tariffs and Canada becoming a state in a recent Meet the Press interview with NBC News journalist Kristen Welker, which aired on December 8.
He also stated that the US annually subsidizes Canada for US$100 million and Mexico for US$300 million.
“We shouldn’t be subsidizing them. Why are we subsidizing these countries?” Trump asked. “If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state. We’re subsidizing Mexico, and we’re subsidizing Canada, and we’re subsidizing many countries all over the world.”
