Flames’ Wolf receives awesome gift from idol Jonathan Quick

Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf received an awesome gift last night that he will cherish for a very long time.

Wolf, who is in his rookie season with the Flames, grew up in California. This made Jonathan Quick, who was once a star for the LA Kings, his favourite goaltender.

Quick has since moved on to the New York Rangers, who happened to be in Calgary last night to take on the Flames. The 38-year-old didn’t get the start, but obviously caught wind of the fact that he is a big idol of Wolf’s. After the game had ended, the Flames’ young netminder received a signed stick from the two-time Stanley Cup champion.

“Dustin, looking forward to watching your career!” Quick wrote. “Best of luck!”

As cool as it would have been for Wolf to go head-to-head against Quick, he was able to put on a stellar performance in front of his idol, kicking aside 27 of the 29 shots he faced in what was a 3-2 victory.

While Wolf has a long way to go before matching the resume of Quick, he is quickly making a name for himself at the NHL level. Last night’s win saw his record improve to 8-2-1, while dropping his goals against average (GAA) to 2.33 and raising his save percentage (SV%) to .926.

“He’s been great all year. He’s always been great,” Connor Zary said about Wolf following last night’s game. “This is my fourth year I think with him now, so it’s pretty easy to see it from my eyes how special he is and how good of a goaltender he is. It’s awesome to see him having success, and when our backs are against the wall a little bit he’s there to bail us out.”

While it remains to be seen as to whether Wolf can continue playing at this high of a level throughout the entirety of the season, the 23-year-old’s impressive start is already garnering him some Calder Trophy chatter.
