It hasn’t taken long for Calgary Flames forward Ryan Lomberg to become a favourite among both fans and his teammates.
Shortly after winning a Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers, the Flames signed Lomberg to a two-year, $4 million deal. The 29-year-old wasn’t brought to Calgary to provide offence but instead physicality and toughness in a bottom-six role. So far, so good.
Lomberg, despite limited ice time, has been a great add so far, seemingly creating energy every chance he gets. That was fully on display at the Saddledome against the New Jersey Devils on November 1, where he first laid a big hit on Paul Cotter before annihilating Nathan Bastian in a fight.

Lomberg was relentless in the scrap, throwing a ridiculous amount of left-hand punches at Bastian before the officials finally stepped in. Now, thanks to the Flames’ new docuseries The Chase, fans have been treated to some behind-the-scenes footage of the reactions that followed immediately after the scrap.

“Where is that f*cking animal,” Tyson Barrie can be heard saying while walking into the dressing room. “Got the old lawnmower going.”
“The last couple [punches], I actually did feel a little bad, too,” a smiling Lomberg said to his teammates. “I actually did. I wasn’t going to stop, but.”
This will only help add to Lomberg’s big-time popularity in Calgary. That popularity had already spiked in recent weeks after he chose to go tarps off during a postgame interview.
“Proud of the group, that’s about our best 60 minutes I think we’ve played all year.”

Though the stat sheet may not show it, Lomberg has had a very positive impact on the Flames’ surprisingly impressive start this season. Only 17 games in, there is plenty of opportunity for him to become even more beloved by the C of Red.
