CEO of Calgary-based Suncor Energy one of the highest-paid in Canada

A list detailing Canada’s 100 highest-paid CEOs is out, and the CEO of Calgary-based oil and gas giant Suncor Energy Inc. made some serious bucks.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) released a new report analyzing compensation for Canada’s 100 highest-paid CEOs in 2023.

The top CEOs earned an average of $13.2 million in 2023 — the third-highest average since the CCPA started tracking CEO pay in 2008. At the top of the list is Patrick Dovigi, CEO of waste management company GFL Environmental Inc., who earned $68,464,987.

R.M. Kruger of Suncor Energy Inc. came in third place with a whopping $36.8 million.

Kruger joined Suncor in April 2023 with 40 years of global experience in the energy industry, including extensive experience in the Canadian oil sands, according to his biography on the Suncor Energy website.

Another Calgary-based CEO also made the list. Gregory L. Ebel of Enbridge Inc. came in 13th place, earning nearly $18.5 million.

The 100 highest-paid CEO list is still very much “an old boys’ club,” with only three women on the list. However, there appears to be some minor progress: for every dollar earned by a male CEO, a woman made $1.40.
