Canada’s Summer McIntosh has broken three world records in five days

Canadian teenage swimming sensation Summer McIntosh is continuing to dominate at her craft.

McIntosh, who is competing at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, set a world record in the 400m freestyle event on the way to a first-place finish on Tuesday. That was wildly impressive in its own right, but she wasn’t even close to being done.

McIntosh has since set two more world records, the first of which came in the women’s 200m butterfly with a time of 1:59:32. The previous record of 1:59.61 was set by Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia in 2014.

Today, McIntosh set a third world record, this one in extremely dominating fashion. She finished first in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:15.48, shockingly knocking off Belmonte Garcia’s 4:18.94 set in 2017 by over three seconds. She also won today’s race by more than five seconds.

McIntosh, who is just 18 years old, made a major name for herself at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she won four medals, three of which were gold. She has taken the swimming world by storm and is only continuing to get better.

Thanks to the outstanding performance in the Olympics, McIntosh had the honour of being one of Canada’s flagbearers to close out the Games. She joined hammer throw gold medalist Ethan Katzberg in doing so.

To little surprise, McIntosh was recently announced as the winner of the 2024 Northern Star Award as Canada’s athlete of the year. The award is given out annually by the Toronto Star and is voted on by sports journalists across the entire country.

Today’s performance gave McIntosh her sixth world record in total. Three of those have come in long course events, with the other three being short courses.

She’ll have one final opportunity to make history tomorrow, competing in the women’s 200m backstroke final. It will mark the first time she has competed internationally in a backstroke event.
