A new Canadian coin highlights one of the country’s most beloved symbols with a sleek design.
The Royal Canadian Mint recently released its Elegant Maple – 1 oz. Fine Silver Coin, with black rhodium plating to make the maple leaf “shine brighter than ever.”
The Mint explains that the details of the maple leaf, including its “deeply veined lobes, and irregularly toothed edges” stand out on this 1 oz. 99.99% pure silver coin.

Its reverse was designed by artist Donna Kriekle and depicts the intricate sugar maple leaf against a black rhodium background.
The Mint explains that the black rhodium “acts as a matte backdrop, redirecting both the light and the viewer’s attention” to the beautiful maple leaf design.
Black rhodium is also used on the coin’s obverse, which depicts the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
