The Calgary Flames have zero intention of trading Rasmus Andersson this season. In fact, it sounds like they don’t want to move him at all.
Andersson’s name has been brought up in some trade discussions, mainly because the Flames are in a rebuilding stage. The 28-year-old, who still has an additional season on his contract, would bring back a major haul in return. That said, management seems to have no desire to move him.
“The Flames have no interest in trading him, point blank,” Pierre LeBrun said on a recent segment of TSN’s Insider Trading. “They’re a little confused as to why they’re getting calls from other teams checking in on his availability. What GM Craig Conroy has told other teams is, ‘We’re not interested in trading Rasmus Andersson.’ He’s not a player on an expiring deal. The Flames are in a playoff race.”
LeBrun also noted that the Flames are far more in favour of signing Andersson to an extension this offseason.
“The Flames hope to extend Rasmus Andersson potentially this summer when he’s allowed to extend one year out,” LeBrun said. “That may or may not happen, but for now, he’s a Calgary Flame. The Flames don’t want to tear it down; they want to keep some key veterans around as they continue to transition their roster. Andersson is one of those players.”
Andersson has been an absolute workhorse this season. He leads the Flames in time on ice with an average of 24:21 minutes per game. Through 42 outings, he has six goals and 18 points, and he is a major reason why the Flames are currently sitting in a playoff spot past the midway point of the 2024-25 campaign.
While it remains to be seen as to what Andersson’s true intentions are when it comes to a future in Calgary, this report strongly suggests he won’t be involved in any sort of deal ahead of the March 5 trade deadline.
