Calgarians will have the chance to retrieve their engraved bricks from Olympic Plaza after the City initially announced that removal would not be possible.
The iconic plaza, originally developed for the 1988 Winter Olympics, will close on January 2 as part of a major redevelopment project led by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC).
Construction is part of a broader downtown revitalization and is expected to last until 2028.
The bricks feature personalized inscriptions that were purchased over 35 years ago to support the development of the Olympic Plaza for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.
Initially, the City announced the bricks wouldn’t be retrievable because of their age and condition, encouraging people to visit the plaza and take photos instead.
Following this announcement, photos began surfacing online of people removing the bricks themselves.
However, after receiving feedback from residents, the City is giving Calgarians a final chance to pick up their bricks before the plaza closes.
Original purchasers or those with a legal interest in the bricks can register for pickup at one of two in-person events scheduled for January 3 and 4, 2025.
Registration opens on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 8 am and closes on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 8 pm.
Verified applicants will receive details about the pickup process, including the location and times, via email.
