A swanky new hotel is opening its doors in downtown Calgary next year, offering more than 150 rooms to choose from.
The 16-storey, 151-room Hampton Inn by Hilton Hotel will be located at 614 6th Avenue SW in downtown YYC, and Daily Hive chatted with Sameer Mawji, executive vice president of Calgary-based Triple One Properties, which developed the project.
Mawji said that a unique challenge with the property was the size of the lot the team had to work with.
“It’s something you would see in Manhattan, New York. It’s such a narrow site, but in such a lucrative site, and it’s highly accessible, it’s one of those things that takes a bit more effort to get what you need.”
Mawji said the project was conceptualized and the land purchased in 2019. Crews broke ground in March 2020, but work was halted due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We sat on it for the better part of three years, breaking ground again in July of 2023.”
The building itself is unique in the sense that steel and concrete were used, and visitors will also have access through a laneway through the building itself, alleviating the risk of having hotel traffic on bustling 6th Avenue for visitor drop-off.
The small lot also led to some innovative measures when it came to hotel parking for guests, with valet parking via a car lift to below-grade triple-high vehicle stackers.
Mawji also said the hotel will be “less cookie cutter, a little more custom,” and that’s evident with the hotel having numerous Kohler-branded guest rooms.
The hotel is expected to start welcoming guests next spring, with the potential of a late April/early May opening date.
