Calgary woke up to a snowfall warning today, and more wintry weather is in the forecast for the city this week.
So keep that snow shovel handy and that winter jacket in sight — a cold snap with even more hefty snow is looking to move into Calgary soon.
Daily Hive chatted with Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), who said that Alberta is now in a pattern that is more conducive to storms to track across the region — and that’s exactly what the forecast is hinting at.
Shelley said that Calgary is looking at the chance of snow multiple times over the coming days, with snow in the forecast for Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
He cautioned that the snow threat on Wednesday is looking more subdued with little accumulation; however, the weekend system may pack more of a punch, and Calgary could see 5 to 10 cm starting late Friday night and lasting through into Sunday.
Temperatures in our city are also set to take a nosedive this week. After being in a pretty anomalous warm pattern for most of November, with temperatures in the mid-to-high teens, Shelley says that is going to change in short order.
Daytime highs of five to 10 degrees below average are expected from now until the third week of November, while Calgary typically sits at or just above the freezing mark this time of year.
Relief from the cold also isn’t looking too good, with a similar pattern to this week likely sticking around for the rest of the month, Shelley added.
“The first big snow event/cold event of the season can catch people off guard a bit,” added Shelley. “Calgarians should expect more of this to come, take extra precautions as you head out travelling by road or sidewalks.”
