Young woman killed in NE Calgary shooting likely not intended target: CPS

Police say a young woman who was killed in a shooting in the city’s northeast over the weekend was likely not the intended target.

Calgary police say they were called to Foothills Medical Centre around 6 p.m. Saturday after getting reports of two people arriving at the hospital who had been shot.

A young woman was pronounced dead in hospital and a teenage boy had serious injuries. The boy’s condition is now stable.

Following an autopsy, the victim has been identified as 19-year-old Calgary resident Jordan Leinen.

Investigators now say they think the shooting happened around 5:20 p.m. when the two victims were in a white 2008 Acura MDX driving westbound on 32 Avenue NE on the Deerfoot Trail overpass.

A suspect vehicle drove up to the Acura and fired multiple shots at the victims, police say.

Police don’t think the shooting was random but they do not believe the deceased woman was the intended target.

“A young woman lost her life, and a family is now left without their loved one,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “This type of violence will not be tolerated in our city, and we are putting several resources from across the Service into investigating this incident.”

Investigators are asking for anyone with security footage or dashcam video of the area to contact them. People with information can contact police at 403-266-1234.

The incident is Calgary’s 10th homicide of the year.
