Verdict incoming for former Calgary city councillor accused of fraud, breach of trust

A former Calgary city councillor who is accused of lying on travel expense claims is expected to hear a judge’s verdict today on charges of fraud and breach of trust.

Concerns over Joe Magliocca’s spending were raised after an investigation found he had spent double what other Calgary councillors had at the 2019 Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Quebec City.

Magliocca named politicians from across the country, including a Quebec cabinet minister, Ontario’s N-D-P leader and the mayor of Halifax, but they testified they had never met the councillor.

During the trial, the defence said there was a significant absence of evidence and the claims were the result of administrative and management errors.
