Toddler, woman rushed to hospital after fire destroys home in NE Calgary

A toddler and a woman have been rushed to hospital after a fire tore through a home in northeast Calgary on Thursday.

Calgary fire crews were called to a single-family home near Falshire Drive NE and 68 Street NE around 3:30 p.m. for reports of a fire.

Responding firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames that were extending to two neighbouring homes, according to Calgary Fire Department (CFD) battalion chief Bruce Barrs.

Barrs says a woman and an 18-month-old girl were both rushed to hospital with smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and remain on scene putting out hotspots. Calgary fire says 25 fire apparatuses and 55 firefighters attended the scene.

The home where the fire broke out has been completely destroyed and five people have been displaced, including the two people taken to hospital.

One of the neighbouring homes is also unfit to live in due to fire damage to the attic, according to Barrs. The second neighbouring home has some fire outside damage to the outside but remains habitable.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
