Testimony of undercover RCMP officer continues in Coutts murder-conspiracy trial

The murder-conspiracy trial of two men at the Coutts border blockade two years ago resumes Friday.

Lethbridge court gets underway later this morning, when the defense will continue its cross-examination of an unnamed RCMP officer, who went undercover as a supporter of the Coutts blockade in 2022.

They’re the second undercover officer to testify at the trial of Anthony Olienick and Chris Carbert, who are charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

The officer testified she and her partner met Olienick at the Smuggler’s Saloon in Coutts in early February of 2022, where he said his friends were being intimidated by RCMP.

During the meeting, she claimed he said all officers at the blockade “should be hung,” and talked about having hundreds of guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition stockpiled if police were t move in.

A defense lawyer suggested the officer misinterpreted Olienick, by viewing the protestors as being angry at police when really, they were just mad at the government and its COVID-19 public health mandates.

The officer responded ‘No,’ adding Olienick was focused on going to war with the RCMP.

More testimony will be heard today.

The jury trial wraps up sometime next month.
