Alberta RCMP says a 15-year-old is dead after being fatally shot by officers Friday morning.
Mounties say around 12:28 a.m., they received a report that someone was being followed by “individuals” and those individuals were threatening to kill the 911 caller.
Around 1:22 a.m., police found a male on 56 Street and 37A Avenue in Wetaskiwin and approached him. The responding officers noticed he had several weapons, all of which were confiscated.
Despite confiscating the weapons, RCMP say a confrontation occurred that resulted in two officers firing shots at the individual.
Officers quickly began life-saving measures and called for paramedics. EMS took the victim to hospital where he later died.
He has since been identified as a 15-year-old from Samson Cree Nation — roughly 50 km south of Edmonton.
“Events like these are traumatic for everyone involved. The Alberta RCMP wish to extend their profound condolences to the family, loved ones and friends of this young man,” said RCMP in a statement.
Due to the nature of the incident, RCMP has contact Alberta’s police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
