What would you do if you woke up one day and everybody else was gone? How would you cope? Would you even matter anymore?
Those questions are the premise of “I Don’t Even Miss You” which runs Jan. 15-18 at One Yellow Rabbit’s 39th annual High Performance Rodeo.
The story is about a non-binary computer programmer named Basil who wakes up to find every other human on the planet is gone.
The play is set two-and-half-years after the devastating discovery as Basil, along with their automated assistant Orchid (think Siri but homemade) try to produce a play that describes who they are, just in case someday an audience arrives to watch it.
It’s also a 90s inspired pop musical with original music.
The show is a co-production of One Yellow Rabbit, Verb Theatre, and Tiny Bear Jaws Theatre.
It was born out of the loneliness and siloing of humanity in the pandemic.
Elena Belyea created it with the help of video and sound designer Tori Morrisson. Belyea said much tech is used to help propel the solo performance along,
“Basically what we’ve done is it is two projection screens, and the set is animated by this giant video design that is kind of home video inspired,” they explain.
“I Don’t Even Miss You” runs at the Big Secret Theatre through to Saturday, Jan. 18.
