A heavy police presence could be seen in downtown Edmonton Friday after gunshots rang out during the morning.
Edmonton police responded to an apartment complex near 107 Avenue and 106 Street after receiving reports that gunshots could be heard and a security guard was found laying on the ground.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 20-year-old security guard in a stairwell and provided first aid until paramedics arrived. EMS took the security guard to hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Homicide detectives have since taken over the investigation, and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 9.
CityNews spoke to a resident of the apartment complex, who said they heard the shots around 12:30 a.m.
“I heard something, and my son confirmed to me it was a gunshot-it was a gunshot,” explained Tammi Comeau.
“He had a big book bag on him, with his security jacket and stuff. He still had his cell phone in his hands. And you could tell, I could tell that he was probably not going to make it. By the time I got there, and I was just about ready to flip him over to see if I could do anything, that’s when the police come in, and they took over.”
Adding, “I was thinking about the guy’s mother all day, all night, he was just trying to keep us safe and he lost his life, I guess.”
