Reception centre for wildfire evacuees in Calgary reopens after initially closing for the night

The City of Calgary reopened its reception centre for wildfire evacuees late Wednesday after initially closing for the night when more people began showing up in search of support.

Many Jasper wildfire evacuees came to the centre at Shouldice Arena at 1515 Home Road NW Wednesday evening to a sign saying it was closed.

Officials tell CityNews the centre was closed because there was no overnight attendance on Tuesday night, leading to a scheduled 5 p.m. close on Wednesday.

In a 10:30 p.m. update Wednesday, the city said the centre would reopen at 11 p.m. to help provide lodging to those in need.

As of Wednesday morning, 108 evacuees had registered in Calgary and the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) had provided 73 hotel rooms for evacuees.

The city is still encouraging evacuees to register with the province.

The centre is scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Thursday.
