Police charge two in ‘violent’ downtown Calgary assault

Calgary police have charged a man and a woman in what is being called a violent fight that happened downtown early Monday morning.

Investigators say around 4 a.m., a verbal altercation started between a group of people walking near Dermot Baldwin Way SE.

Someone in the group used bear spray and then a man and a woman left the group to head to their vehicle parked nearby.

Police say as the pair walked away, two women came up behind them and one of them used an edged weapon to hit the woman in the head.

The two victims of the attack got into their vehicle and went back to Dermot Baldwin Way, where they were allegedly driving at and hitting the two woman who had previously attacked them.

Investigators say afterwards, the vehicle drove away onto 5 Avenue SE.

The man and woman who were in the vehicle drove to hospital to get their injuries treated, according to police.

Police think other people might have been affected by the hit-and-run and they are looking to talk to anyone involved.

The driver of the vehicle, Paris Samuel Appenheimer, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The 43-year-old has been released from custody and is set to appear in court on July 31.

The woman who used the edged weapon was arrested and taken to hospital for the injuries she got from being hit by the vehicle, police say. Chekesha George has been charged with assault with a weapon and breach of probation.
