Hollywood is once again making an appearance in Calgary, as a Netflix series is set to start filming in the city next week.
The Abandons tells the story of “a group of diverse renegade families living on the fringes of society in 1850s Oregon,” according to the streaming service.
It stars Gillian Anderson from The X-Files and The Crown, alongside Lena Headey from Game of Thrones.
According to ACTRA Alberta, the project is filiming in Calgary from May 14 to October 18.
In March, Netflix held an open casting call for the 1850s Western, saying it was looking for authentic looks, unique character faces, hard-working types, blue collar looks, blacksmiths, rancher and labourer types. butchers, upscale affluent looks, and amputees.
Major productions such as The Last of Us and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, have recently picked Calgary and other parts of southern Alberta as their backdrops.
In January, Minister of Arts, Culture, and Status of Women Tanya Fir, made a trip to Los Angeles to promote the province’s film industry, meeting with executives from HBO and other production companies, showcasing what Alberta has to offer.
