Necropsy results for Calgary polar bear to be announced

The results of a necropsy are expected to be announced Tuesday after the death of a polar bear at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo last week.

On Friday, the zoo closed its Wild Canada Zone after seven-year-old Baffin didn’t reappear after going underwater.

Zoo officials said at the time their two polar bears, Baffin and Siku, were seen sparring in a pool around 11:30 a.m. when one of the bears didn’t surface.

The care team confirmed Baffin dead in the pool.

There were a number of spectators around at the time of the incident.

Baffin and Siku came to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo in October from Manitoba’s Assiniboine Park Zoo as part of an $11 million expansion to the Wild Canada Zone.
