Mom, twin toddlers escape SE Calgary house fire, two cats perish

A Calgary mom jumped into action Monday night when smoke began to fill her southeast Calgary home.

Calgary Fire Department (CFD) Battalion Chief Scott Cowan says the fire broke out just before 10:30 p.m. in the 0-100 block of Deer Ridge Mews SE.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a two-storey residence.

“A mom and two-year-old twins had escaped the situation already,” Cowan explained. “In talking to the mom, it sounded like she was sitting in the house and the house started to fill with smoke, so she ran upstairs, got her kids, and ran outside, which is exactly what we tell people to do.”

Once inside, firefighters found flames in the basement, which were quickly put out.

Cowan says crews then began to look for two cats that were still in the house.

“They did find two cats performed CPR on one of them, and unfortunately, both cats perished in the fire,” he explained.

No other injuries have been reported.

The house suffered significant smoke damage, according to Cowan, and the family will be displaced for some time.

No information is available on the cause of the fire.
