Man in critical condition after being struck by vehicle in SE Calgary

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck by a vehicle in southeast Calgary.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of 17 Avenue SE and 52 Street SE around 11:25 p.m. Monday for reports of a crash.

Calgary police say a man and a woman were walking southbound to cross 17 Avenue on the eastside of the intersection when a 2023 Toyota RAV 4 was turning eastbound onto 17 Avenue from northbound 52 Street.

The RAV 4 struck the man and then hit a light post and signpost before coming to a stop on the sidewalk, according to police.

The man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The driver of the RAV 4 remained at the scene.

Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
