Police say a man with an extensive criminal history is facing more charges after he was found sleeping in a stolen Mercedes east of Calgary.
Strathmore RCMP say an officer was on patrol in an industrial park in the south part of the town when they saw a silver Mercedes Benz SUV parked in the middle of the road with the brake lights on.
The officer put on their emergency lights, but the driver did not react, according to police.
Police learned the SUV was stolen and suspected to be involved in a number of property crimes in the Calgary area. More officers arrived to box in the SUV and a spike belt was put in front of the rear wheels.
It is alleged the sleeping driver eventually woke up after officers issued commands and the SUV rolled over the spike belt before coming to a stop. The driver got out of the vehicle and was arrested.
Officers searched the SUV and found a sawed off shotgun and ammunition in the back seat. The vehicle was also allegedly filled with several stolen items including tools, pieces of identification, financial documents, insurance documents, vehicle keys, break-in tools and bear spray.
The driver, 25-year-old Anthony Favel, was wanted on a warrant out of Calgary for 10 previous convictions and is now facing 24 additional charges.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
