A man is dead after being taken into custody by police following a disturbance at a southeast Calgary hotel early Tuesday morning.
Just before 1 a.m., officers responded to the Carriage House Hotel and Conference Centre on Macleod Trail SE for reports that a man was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the area.
When police got there, they found a man in the front lobby acting erratically.
Calgary police say officers tried to escalate the situation but the man wasn’t co-operative.
There was a struggle between police and the man, and a officer used his taser.
Police say the man continued to be combative with officers, and one officers used his pepper spray.
The man was arrested and taken into custody and short time later went into medical distress.
Despite the work of emergency services personnel, the man was declared dead at the scene.
No officers or members of the public were hurt.
The province’s police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), is now investigating.
Calgary police wouldn’t provide further comment.
