Man charged in fatal 2022 shooting in NE Calgary

Calgary police have laid charges in the fatal shooting of a man in the city’s northeast two years ago.

Investigators say just before 11 a.m. on Monday, July 4, 2022, officers were called for reports of shots fired on Falsby Way NE.

When police got there, they confirmed a man dead on scene. He was later identified as 27-year-old Shakiel Ahkeem Bennett.

Investigators interviewed several witnessed and surveillance camera footage over the last two years.

On Tuesday, police arrested and charged 37-year-old Michael Douglas Keepness with first-degree murder.

He is in custody and set to appear in court on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Initially, investigators were looking to talk to an unknown passenger in a black Nissan Rouge driven by the victim before he was shot. Police say Keepness wasn’t the passenger.

“Bringing closure to grieving families is something we strive to do in every case, and we know not every family gets answers,” Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit said in a statement. “Our team of dedicated investigators, spanning multiple areas across the Service, worked diligently over the last two years to gather the necessary evidence that has led us to the person who is responsible, so that he can be held accountable for his actions.”
