A Lethbridge mother has been charged in connection with the death of her 13-year-old son over the holidays.
The investigation began after officers found the body of a 13-year-old boy outside of a business on Mayor Magrath Drive South at around 2 p.m. on Dec. 26.
Lethbridge Police now say the victim and his mother had been using drugs around 5 p.m. on Christmas Day when the boy overdosed at a home on the southside of the city.
A male at the home tried to perform live-saving measures and a call to 911 was made from the home. Police allege when first responders arrive the mother hid the victim and lied about his whereabouts.
The mother and the son walked to a nearby business and investigators say evidence suggests the boy was medical distress.
Surveillance footage suggests the pair spent the night on the street and the boy was never moved from the ground, according to police. The next afternoon the mother reported to police she had found her son dead.
Investigators are still waiting for toxicology reports to confirm his cause of death.
Police have charged 38-year-old Lethbridge resident Blanche Isobel Irene Fick with criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessities of life.
The accuses remains in custody and is schedule to appear in court of Friday.
