Large hail, damaging winds: Severe thunderstorm warning issued for north Calgary

A severe thunderstorm warning is in place for Calgary as meteorologists track a storm entering the north end of the city that could bring strong wind and very large hail.

Environment Canada says the thunderstorm was about 15 kilometres west of Airdrie around 7:45 p.m. and could produce “very strong wind gusts, up to baseball size hail and heavy rain.”

“Extremely large hail can smash windows, destroy property and vehicles and cause life-threatening injury,” warns ECCC meteorologists. “Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.”

Other areas in the warning include Airdrie, Crossfield, Calgary, Bottrel and Cochrane.

ECCC issues warning whenever thunderstorms are capable of bringing large hail, damaging winds, or torrential rainfall.
