Heat wave to continue throughout weekend in Calgary

A stretch of hot weather is expected to continue in Calgary over the weekend.

An Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) heat warning issued early this week will persist, with daytime highs forecasted between 28 C and 36 C.

“The next couple of days are all expected to be above 30 C and with that in mind, the heat warning will continue,” explained CityNews660 Meteorologist Kevin Stanfield. ‘It started up a couple of days ago at a 29.1 C on July 16 and we’re not expecting the heat warning to end until we get to the 25th.”

Overnight lows will remain warm, according to the weather agency, ranging from around 14 C up to 21 C.

Cooler temperatures are expected to start moving into northwestern parts of the province by mid news week, but the ECCC warns hot conditions may continue into next weekend for some parts of southern Alberta.

According to Stanfield, by July 26, Calgary’s temperature is expected to be back in the mid-20s which will alleviate the city from the heat.

Local agencies stepping up during heat wave

Woods Homes is coming to the aid of unhoused youth in Calgary during these hot temperatures.

Spokesperson Mischa Nagtalon says those living without shelter during this time are at a significant risk.

“Those who are experiencing homelessness are 200 times more likely to die from exposure to this and so I think we have a responsibility in our city to ensure that we’re protecting the most vulnberable populations that we have,” she said.

To address this, Woods’ Homes is calling on Calgarians to help out by packing ‘cooling kits.’

Suggested items include bottled water, gatorade or juice boxes, a hat, sun visor, sunscreen, light shirt, wet wipes, deodorant, and lip balm, along with sandals or flip-flops, granola bars, and fruit snacks.

Those willing to help are asked to pack the items up in backpack and drop it off at one of the organizations locationbs in Inglewood or Parkdale.

Wildfire risk remains high

Alberta’s heat wave has pushed fire risk to dangerous levels.

Alberta Wildfire said Friday Calgary and area are under ‘very high’ and ‘extreme’ levels of fire danger.

On Wednesday, the province reported 47 new wildfire starts and 128 active wildfires.

Fire bans remain in place for Alberta’s Forest Protection Area, as well as K-Country and Banff National Park.
