Former Calgary city councillor announces 2025 mayoral run

Calgary’s municipal election is one year away, but one potential candidate is eager to hit the campaign trails.

Former councillor Jeff Davison announced Thursday he is bidding for the mayor’s seat next fall.

But, are Calgarians even thinking about the next election?

One woman CityNews spoke to said she doesn’t have heading to the polls on her mind, but there are issues she would like to see resolved.

“If the grocery prices could be addressed that would be great,” she said. “The general cost of living is pretty astronomical.”

On the other hand, another Calgarian says voting is top of mind for him, and he’s ready for a change.

“Yeah, ideally I would like to see a more conservative government… more push on infrastructure,” he said. “We have got a lot of problems.”

Davison says infrastructure is one of his top priorities, along with scrapping the city’s rezoning plan, increasing public safety and freezing 2025 municipal taxes, including property taxes.

This isn’t his first time running for mayor. Davison’s 2021 run saw a third place finish, behind Mayor Jyoti Gondek and Jeromy Farkas, who is currently the CEO of the Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation.

“Every election is different, I don’t spend much time looking in the rear view mirror there is a reason why the windshield is larger… I look at where we are taking Calgary and where we are going forward,” he said.

Another Calgarians says public safety is top of mind for him, regardless of who becomes mayor.

“I want to see more action with the homeless population, addiction problems, safety problems downtown we need to rein everything in,” he said. “It seems a bit out of control.”

Calgary’s next municipal election is set for Oct. 20, 2025.
