Firefighters hurt, person missing after SE Calgary townhouse fire

Two firefighters were hurt and one person is still missing after a blaze early Thursday morning in Calgary’s southeast.

Shortly before 3 a.m., crews responded to a townhouse in the neighbourhood of Legacy, where they found a unit engulfed in flames.

“Eventually we called a second alarm for additional units for help with evacuation and a fire that had spread to a neighbouring unit. The fire is under control,” said Battalion Chief Innes Fraser. “We do have investigators on scene from both CFD [Calgary Fire Department] and CPS [Calgary Police] and they are currently looking for the cause of the fire.”

Fraser tells CityNews one person is still missing and at this point, it’s unclear if they were in the house or not.

“Most folks were evacuated quickly. We are still missing one person,” he said. “We can’t confirm at this time, but they could have been in the building.”

At least nine homes were evacuated, a few of which suffered serious damage.

The firefighters who were hurt were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Because of the fire, it had weakened the structure of the townhome so much that two firefighters actually fell through the floor,” Fraser said. “Both were transported to hospital with minor injuries and we expect them to be released soon.”
