A Sherwood Park school principal who was charged with sexual assault earlier this month was arrested again after another alleged victim came forward, police say.
Strathcona County RCMP say 42-year-old Amit Mali is facing an additional sex assault charge.
Police say a second woman contacted police on May 14 after law enforcement released details of Mali’s arrest earlier that day.
Mounties received a first report of sex assault from a woman on Feb. 2. Mali was initially charged with criminal harassment and three counts of sexual assault, at which point he was released on an undertaking.
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) has identified Mali as an employee of Sherwood Heights Junior High. Following the Feb. 2 complaint, EIPS says it placed him on leave and he is no longer employed by the school board.
“Senior leaders and trustees are very distressed about the incident as the safety of the entire school community is of paramount importance to Elk Island Public Schools,” the school board said in a statement May 14. “The division cooperated fully with the official investigation but because the matter is now before the courts, we are unable to provide further comment.”
Following the latest allegation, the accused was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. His next court appearance is May 29 in Sherwood Park.
Police say “with this newest victim coming forward, RCMP would like to encourage any other potential victims” to contact RCMP at 780-467-7741 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
