Dozens of residents needed to be evacuated after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in the city’s southeast on Monday evening.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says they received a call about a fire at the complex near Deer Run Boulevard SE and Canyon Meadows Drive around 6 p.m.
Fire crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the third floor of the building.
“Due to the large volume of smoke on arrival and growing fire conditions on the roof of the structure, responding crews called a working fire and a second alarm,” reads a release from the fire department.
Fire officials say crews searched and evacuated the complex before attacking the blaze from the inside and outside. A ladder truck was needed to bring the fire under control.
No injuries were reported, but 36 people have been evacuated and displaced. There is no word when they will be allowed back in the building.
“CEMA and Red Cross are working with CFD to assess evacuee needs, including reunions with pets at scene,” reads the CFD release.
Crews are expected to remain on scene overnight checking for hotspots. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
